Bible Stories: An Adult Education Class
By The Rev. Bill Stroop, Ph.D.
Trinity Episcopal Church
Hattiesburg, Mississippi
October 2006 - January, 2007
(This page updated 6 January 2007)

The Bible contains many of the most intriguing stories about some of the most interesting figures in literature. In our faith, however, the Bible is a sacred book, and these stories hold special meaning. This class is intended to explore some of the well known stories of the Bible and to look deeply at some of the more well known characters of the Bible to deepen our understanding and strengthen our faith.

The week before each class I will prepare for you a list of Bible texts, and I'll provide those readings for you to take home. Those same readings will be provided here as well. Your task is to read them before class. Then we will begin each class by viewing of segments of one of two DVDs: Mysteries of the Bible (Questar, Inc., 2003), and Ancient Evidence: Mysteries of the Bible (A BBC Manchester/Discovery Co-production, 2003). These segments will set the stage for discussion of the texts in class each Sunday morning.

We will not go through the Bible systematically, but rather we will look at some of the stories and characters with which we are most familiar from the Old Testament and the New. Bible quotations will most often be taken from the New Revised Statndard Version (NRSV), but many other versions may be used as well. If you are interested in obtaining a very, very good computer resource for Biblical Study, I believe the best available is BibleWorks (© BibleWorks, LLC) currently available in version 6.0.
